Born in Mumbai in 1928, Akbar Padamsee is celebrated for his distinctive command over space, form and colour, and his ability to speak beyond preset definitions and categories.
Working across a rich spectrum of mediums and select genres, Padamsee is particularly known for his luminous metascapes and for his human figures. His exploration of mediums has also led him to work with digital graphics, black and white photographs, and film-making, in addition to his extensive work in paint and print making.

Graduating from the venerated Sir J. J. School of Art, Mumbai, he moved to France in the early 1950s, where he developed his body of work under the mentorship of surrealist artist Stanley Hayter. His first solo show was held at the Jehangir Art Gallery in 1954, establishing his place as a leading contemporary artist in India.
His work has since won many numerous accolades including the Lalit Kala Akademi Fellowship (1962), J.D. Rockefeller Foundation fellowship (1965), Kalidas Samman (1997), Lalit Kala Ratna Puraskar (2004), and the Kailash Lalit Kala award (2010) to name a few. He was also honoured with a Padma Bhushan in 2010.
