Born 1956 in Kerala, Baiju Parthan is widely recognised as a pioneer of intermedia in the Indian art scene. Based in Mumbai, his work expresses the reflections and dialogues that inspire and carve out his own course across time. Parthan blurs boundaries to give new voice to the overlays in understanding, expertise and muse that he brings with him.
He obtained degrees in Botany and Comparative Mythology, in addition to his training as a painter- markedly broadening the scope of his concerns and response to art and life. These explorations also led him to pursue a Masters in Arts Philosophy- another step in his continued effort to elaborate on the working of the Universe within through the art and medium before him. He moved on from traditional mediums to draw inspiration and material from sources such as popular culture and media, cosmology and maps, and scientific charts to name a few.
Baiju Parthan has exhibited extensively in India and abroad in solo and group shows. He received the Lalit Kala Akademi merit prize in 1981, and was nominated as Artist of the Year 2000 by Sotheby’s, London.
He lives and works in Mumbai.
