Born in Chennai in 1942, R. B. Bhaskaran is widely regarded as one of the protagonists of the Modern Indian art movement. Breaking away from traditional identities and motif, Bhaskaran helped shape a new vocabulary for the Indian artist through his own work, and in his role as the Director of the Lalit Kala Akademi.
Bhaskaran studied Advanced Painting at the Government College of Arts & Crafts in Chennai, and went on to train in Fresco technique in Bhanasthali Vidyapith College, Rajasthan. He has studied Printmaking techniques extensively in India and abroad, including his post graduation at Portsmouth Polytechnic, England as a British Council Scholar. He also studied Intaglio Printmaking, Lithography and Ceramics at En Hod in Israel under scholarship from IAPA, UNESCO.
Bhaskaran is known for the directness of his work, the clarity of his line and the strong sense of colour he brings to his work. Among his portfolio of work, his Cat series has become synonymous with him, starting off as a sketch of a wandering cat in his studio and evolving into an obsession with the creature.
He lives and works out of Chennai.
