Born in Kolkata in 1960, Jayasri Burman is known for the bold themes, mythic elements and strong hues in her work, with watercolour being her medium of choice. She studied at Kala Bhavan in Shantiniketan, and the Government College of Art and Craft in Kolkata. She went to study print-making under Monsieur Ceizerzi in Paris.
Her work derives from her manifold experiences as well as her roots. Hailing from a family of eminent artists, she brings an almost lyrical quality to her work, exploring the mythical, modern and miniature. She has exhibited extensively across India and abroad, and has a series of dedicated publications to her credit as well.
Among her many awards and accolades, Jayasri Burman received the National Award in 1985, and was invited to the President’s House as an artist in residence. A series of commemorative stamps with her works were released by the Government of India to mark International Women’s Day in 2007.
She lives and works in New Delhi.
