JYOTI BHATT
jyoti bhatt.jpg

Born 1934 in Bhavnagar, Jyoti Bhatt is an accomplished artist from the Baroda School of Indian art. Celebrated for his prints, paintings and photography, he studied at the Faculty of Fine Arts, Baroda and Banasthali Vidyapeeth, Rajasthan, before going on to train at the Accademia di Belle Art, Naples and Pratt Institute, New York.

Bhatt has worked in a number of different mediums including watercolour and oil paint, but it is his passion for print making that he is renowned for. His passion for intaglio- which he trained in at the Pratt Institute- inspired his contemporaries at the Faculty of Fine Arts, Baroda including noted artists such as Bhupen Khakkar, Jeram Patel and Gulam Mohammed Sheikh. His etchings, intaglio and screen prints explore Indian motifs and folk designs, drawing on early cubist influences to create a vocabulary in contemporary Indian pop art.

His work is featured in numerous public and private collections on the international stage, including The Smithsonian Institute, Washington DC, the Museum of Metropolitan Art, New York, and the British Museum, London. He has exhibited his work at numerous solo and group shows worldwide, and has been conferred with the Lalit Kala Akademi’s National Award (1963), a Gold Medal at the International Print Biennale, Italy (1967), and a Padma Shri from the Government of India (2019).
