Born 1948 in Rongpur, Bangladesh, Rini Dhumal is a printmaker and painter who explores the breath and soul of her subjects through her work. Her understanding of printmaking seeps through her paintings, giving her a signature style that sets her work apart. She began her pursuits as an artist at the Faculty of Fine Arts, Baroda where she completed graduate and post graduate courses in painting. 

Dhumal worked  under revered artists such as Somnath Hore and K.G. Subramanyan during her early years, as well as under the Sir Stanley William Hayter and Krishna Reddy at the Atelier 17, Paris on scholarship from the French government. She explores a rich array of mediums and techniques in her work- from prints, graphics and ceramics to transforming everyday objects into artistic expressions. Drawing upon a storehouse of historical details, memories and anecdotal references, she creates a vivid aesthetic in her work. 

She has a number of awards and scholarships to her claim- she was awarded a research scholarship by the government of India (1983) and received a travel grant from the British Government (1997) for printmaking in the UK. Awards to her credit include the Governor’s Gold Medal (1974), AIFACS award (1985) and the National Award from Lalit Kala Akademi (1988). She has exhibited at numerous solo and group exhibitions across India and abroad.
