Born in Gulbarga, Karnataka in 1959, Vijay Bagodi is a prolific printmaker whose work brings together the fancy of myth and legend with the stirring of socio-political challenge, evoking an inspired and richly emotional dialogue. Bagodi began his training as an artist at the Ideal Fine Arts Institute in Gulbarga, before going on to complete his diploma in painting and post-graduate diploma in printmaking and graphic arts from the Faculty of Fine Arts, Baroda.
Bagodi has worked extensively with prints for over three decades creating delightful etchings, woodcuts, lithographs, serigraphs and monoprints. His early work explored personal space, emotion and memory, moving to more socio-political themes that centered around the disaster, challenge and loss experienced in the urban Indian context. Processing his observations and experiences through his work, his prints emerge as a medium of expression and catharsis for the artist.
He has exhibited his work in numerous national and international exhibitions including the Festival of India, San Diego, the 10th International Exhibition of Graphic Arts, Germany, and the 22nd International Exhibition of Graphic Arts, Slovenia. His work has earned him numerous accolades including the National Award at the National Exhibition of Contemporary Art (1997) and an honourable mention at the 5th Bharat Bhavan Biennale of Print Art (2001).
